Boho Bathroom Remodel

Boho Bathroom Remodel

This modern boho bathroom remodel was definitely one for the books. We decided to demo and start the bathroom remodel 2 weeks before my husband deployed. Great idea, am I right? We sure do know how to keep it adventurous around here! This bathroom was going to be used for guests and eventually for Liv (and future children), so we wanted to create a modern boho design.

My husband was so "gun-ho" about getting things rolling that we bought tile, fixtures, and the vanity all a week before we started. My in-laws flew out to help and to see my husband off and we were so grateful for their help! Did I forget to mention I was also 6 months pregnant? I told you we were adventurous!

Can we just talk about how awful this bathroom was? I mean, carpet in the bathroom? Why was that even a thing! These countertops were even a trip, they were below my waist and I'm 5'1″ so that's saying something.

Check out that yummy carpet, y'all!

The previous homeowners said they didn't do any upgrades to the home when they lived here, so this is our 24 year old bathroom in all its glory!

I think y'all understand how stuck in the 90's our bathroom was and how badly it needed to be remodeled. We started out by demoing the bathroom ourselves and threw out everything! The fiberglass tub/shower combo and the vanity had to be cut in half for it to fit through the house.

My father-in-law did the plumbing for the new tub and shower fixture. Can I just say free help is the best help? It was a good thing he was a plumber in a previous life. We went with a different style lever so the plumbing had to be reworked. It also was not to code since it was put in about 24 years ago.

Tile was a no brainer for this space! We had to install sub floor to make the floor level,  since there was carpet in the sink area and linoleum in the washroom. We leveled the tub and secured it into place to finish the plumbing rough-in. While all the plumbing was being reworked I painted the walls and trim in the sink area.

After the tub was secured we put the cement board down, or I should say the tile guy and I. At this point in the project the demo and plumbing took a lot longer than anticipated. The demo took a few days and we had to purchase all new plumbing rough-in supplies since the plumbing was so old. I also returned our tub for a different one, so that slowed us down too.

We planned to tile ourselves, but we were worried we'd run out of time and we did. The tile guy did the floor and shower tile for $850, which is an unbelievably good price. However, he did tile work as a hobby so it's not perfect. But, hey! We weren't paying for perfect either.

Tile work took a few days for him to complete with only working on it for about 4-5 hours a day. We went with a matte grey hexagon floor tile from The Tile Shop and it was such a dream!

After the tile guy finished, I still had to caulk everything, clean the grout off the tile more, add toe kicks, install base boards and paint the washroom. Meaning, I still had a lot to do at 7 months pregnant. Let's just say I was needing a real good back massage after all of this.

Cody was supposed to be able to install all the plumbing fixtures when he came home for the birth of our daughter, but we were going to have a lot of visitors in the coming weeks after Liv was born so I hired a plumber to come install the vanity, sink faucets, toilet and shower fixtures for $350.

I spray painted the cabinet hardware to match the rest of the fixtures and it looks so much better if I do say so myself.

I had my girlfriend come over to help me hang the mirror and Cody installed the light fixtures when he came home from deployment for Liv's birth.

I still can't believe the transformation photo! Look at that before and after y'all!

This was my very first remodel all the way down to the studs, well sort of. The washroom got down to the studs! The best advice I can give anyone attempting their first remodel, stop dreaming and just do it. If you get lost or not sure what you're doing a long the way just Google or YouTube it. That's the only reason why I know anything about DIY friends.
